IC:
Character name: Sakuya Izayoi

Fandom: Touhou Project

Timeline: Post 12.8

Age: 20-ish

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Sakuya is extremely skilled with knives, throwing and wielding them. With her deft fingers, she's also skilled at sleight of hand and parlor tricks. Oh, and she can control time.

Sakuya can stop, speed up, slow down or otherwise manipulate time. She can not time travel in a real sense because she cannot move time backwards - while she can make objects retrace their path through the past, suck as causing something to fall back up onto the shelf it fell from, she can't actually reverse what has happened if something made it change state, e.g. she cannot cause something to un-age, food to become un-eaten, something to un-rot or un-break, etc. Her manipulation of time also means a manipulation of space - she can expand space by slowing time down or contract it by speeding it up. She uses this to increase the size of the mansion she works in or to store things in a 4th-dimensional skirt.

Oh and like any good touhou, she can fly.

Touhou also employs a spellcard system - a set of formalized rules for regulating and using one's powers in a formal duel of abilities. Sakuya's for the most part involve stopping time to set up large numbers of knives around the opponent - upon time resuming movement, the knives will fly in their set paths, filling the air with steel. Some variants include a counter attack where she intercepts a physical attack by stopping time, moving behind the opponent and leaving a field of knives around them, throwing a knife that leaves trails of knives behind it due to time lag, or simply using the stopped time to create large, intricate patterns of knives. Some other spellcard abilities involve bouncing knives off of nonexistent surfaces, firing off large numbers of knives that then come back and home in on the opponent, throwing knives at high-speed with time acceleration, generating knives that spin around her for a short time, knives that are thrown, halt in place, then can be made to continue flying on command, and knives that ricochet rapidly around the room without losing speed. There are also those that slow down time for everyone in the vicinity, stop time completely allowing free movement for her, being able to inflict stopped time on an opponent by striking them with her pocket watch, the Luna Dial, generating pockets of stopped time that freeze anyone who gets stuck in them, and generating doubles of herself by manipulating time paradoxes. Since she constantly appears with new spellcards every game she shows up in, it can be assumed that she can make new spellcards and patterns as she likes, though it probably takes some time. However, considering the Spellcard System is simply a formality enforced by the rules of Gensokyo, there's really no reason she can't just use the ability to stop, slow down, speed up, or reverse movement of time, as well as her knife throwing abilities, manipulation of space and illusionary techniques however she wanted in as many creative permutations as her mind could come up with outside the restrictions of the Spellcard System.

How would they use their abilities?: Generally, Sakuya would use them in practical ways such as being able to clean her place of residency in an instant, fetching items without having to make others wait, etc. Being able to effectively teleport around and make things appear out of nowhere is also handy for the Perfect Maid. Her basic imperative for using any of her abilities is for the sake of her master. This could possibly include killing, but who knows. She's generally content to only deal with things that affect her household. So generally, she probably wouldn't be causing much trouble (or much help) on a large scale that affected other people outside of her household.

Appearance: Sakuya is a silver-haired girl of medium height and build. Her hair is of about jaw length, with her bangs cut to stay out of her eyes and with two long braids framing her face, going down to a little past her shoulders. She has blue eyes that turn red under certain conditions, such as when she uses her spellcards. While obviously she can’t use those here, I think it might be permissible for her eyes to turn red when she’s mad or otherwise in “eliminate all threats” mode in Amat, considering other characters who get to keep dog ears or other unnatural body parts. Her normal state of attire is a blue and white maid uniform, one with a knee-length skirt and a white apron on the front and a white frilled headband. There are several variations of it in the several games she appears in, such as a winter version that includes a scarf and long sleeves. She also usually carries a number of silver knives, a deck of cards, and a golden pocket watch among other essentials she may need for her job.

Background/Personality:
Sakuya conducts her role as head maid perfectly, performing her duties with a smile and a sense of refined elegance about her. She’s very practical about things, always level headed and rarely panicked even in the face of danger. How she treats others is entirely based on her standing with them. She’s very loyal to her mistress, following her and trusting in her words and proceeding with an air of deference. To guests or humans that she interacts with in a business capacity, she is polite, courteous and tactful. To those working under her, she is strict, practical and no-nonsense. To those who dare to intrude upon the mansion and represent a threat to her lady, she shows no mercy and would gladly cut them down. She has a mask for every occasion, and a mask it is; she holds no others particularly close to herself, as she regards herself as a loyal servant to her mistress and certainly nothing more, keeping others divided cleanly into the categories above. However, since coming to Gensokyo and seeing that even her mistress isn’t all powerful, she’s learned to open up a little to other humans and those around her. Though Sakuya’s focus is always on what needs to be done and the needs of her mistress and she goes about these duties efficiently, she does this in a fairly light manner, smiling and making small jokes about the situation. She’s quick to take initiative but doesn’t always come to the greatest conclusions when dealing with things she knows nothing about, often appearing even airheaded. What she is good at is following orders and eliminating problems; what her mistress orders to be cut, will be cut. It could be said that she’s also loyal to a fault; if someone has earned her trust, she’ll likely serve them without question. So while she might appear friendly and is able to socialize smoothly enough, sometimes it’s just an act and she’s just being polite or ensuring the situation goes as well.

The reasons for this behavior is because her life is more or less defined by her job in Remilia's service, serving as her Head Maid. She is perfectly loyal to the vampire, unquestioning as to her orders and commands even when they're selfish or not particularly logical. It's canonly a mystery how she came into Remilia's service, and there are rumors in the human village as to her origins, whether she might have been brought in as a young girl, be a failed vampire hunter who was subjugated by Remilia, is an alien, or some other reason. In any case, the name "Sakuya Izayoi" is one that was given to her by Remilia, and she takes this to heart as meaning the person she was before no longer exists and she now only lives to serve the master who gave her that name. In the course of the Touhou games and other works, she serves as an almost completely static character, with none of the events that happen really changing the personality she had from the outset. The only real change is mentioned a bit in some of the profile notes by the creator, ZUN, that since the Scarlet Mist incident in which Remilia was defeated, Sakuya started being seen around the human village more and had more contact with other humans. This can be seen as her opening up a bit more and becoming a bit more humanized rather than just a tool, a result of her defeat and her mistress's defeat, in finding value in other people as more than just prey or intruders.

Because canon specifically obscures Sakuya's origins, one can only guess what kind of past she might have had. I personally headcanon that her life involved a lot of slashing, vampire hunting and being very solitary from other human beings - part of why she's so at home in a house full of devils and tends not to have very close relations with humanity despite being human, the sole human in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Orphaned and ostracized because of her powers, she had no reason to harbor any love of humanity or try to integrate herself with it. So being accepted (well, and probably defeated) by Remilia, a creature who truly was a devil, a monster like what Sakuya had been called, lead to her unswerving loyalty.

In any case, that kind of harsh background and living as an outcast then as the servant of the devil is what leads her to be fairly amoral when it comes to issues like killing and such that most people from normal society would have rules about. She simply was not raised with those kinds of rules and now she lives with devils, preparing meals for vampires.

Have you read up on how the game works?: The journals are programs called Flaming Ferret, money can be obtained through missions, obtaining permanent jobs, mooching off friends and/or stealing.

1st person sample:
[The video feed clicks on to reveal Sakuya, actually taking a break for once rather than tirelessly working at cleaning, cooking and everything else that needed doing. She's shuffling a deck of cards between her hands, making them dance and jump back and forth through the air with seemingly no effort]

I never imagined space was quite so vast. I thought our trip to the moon was a long distance to go, but even that compares little to this vessel. The size of the vessel as well - we were quite cramped towards the end. I wonder, how many of you out there had experience with space travel before arriving here? For those who didn't, how fantastical-seeming was it to wake up to this?

[A pause, just the sound of cards flicking between her fingertips]

And for those with experience, what kind of sleights can't be performed in zero-gravity? And are there any ones that can only be performed in such circumstances?

3rd person sample: (Taken from my Amat App)
Sakuya’s eyes snapped open just as the sunlight from the window began to pass over them. Immediately, she knew something was wrong. Besides the fact that all windows in the Scarlet Devil Mansion had their curtain drawn at almost all times, there was no way that Sakuya, with her impeccable sense of time, would possibly oversleep so far as to have the sunlight filter through them to her bed.

The explanation, of course, was that this was not her bed.

The maid rolled out of the bed immediately, feet hitting the floor as she backed against the wall, eyes both taking in her surroundings and searching for any hostile threats. A number of things quickly made themselves know. First, the fact that this obviously was not the mansion anymore. Second, her clothes, folded and set beside the bed. Third, a jingling noise at her throat, accompanied by a sudden awareness of something around her neck. Reaching up, she felt a band of woven material there. A collar? And a metal tag hanging from it by a ring. Just what was going on?

Perceiving there to be no immediate threats, she stood up out of the crouch she had been in and approached her clothes. She was pleased to find, besides her uniform, all her knives were there, along with her other personal items, such as her pocket watch. Naturally, she wanted to be dressed, but now that she was paying less attention to her surroundings and more to her current state, she noticed she felt somewhat… sticky.

Trying to remember how she got here, she couldn’t remember anything between the time she went to sleep until the waking just now. Well, nothing except perhaps a dream… that had been a dream, hadn’t it? In any case, a shower was in order.

Thirty minutes later, Sakuya was clean, dressed and armed. Despite her best efforts to remove the collar around her neck – and she had certainly tried, as attested to by the cut near the back of her neck where her knife had slipped a little – it and its humiliating tag remained just as they had been since she’d awoken here. She would have to find out what it meant and who had put it there. After that, the only mystery left besides the unhelpful staff service here was the small black device left in her room. Pressing a button, Sakuya watched as it flashed to life. There were… words. Voices. Moving pictures. It was almost like magic, but there seemed to be nothing magical about it. If anything, it reminded her of some of the odd devices that turned up at that second-hand shop from the Outside World. As she observed it though, it quickly became obvious these were other people – or the simulation of other people. She also saw the options allowing her to post as well. Would that let her communicate with the people using this device as a medium? She was familiar with some spells that allowed similar long-distance communication. But first, she observed, learning as much as she could about what was being said.

And frankly, she was a little disgusted.

Still, there was only so much that could be done by sitting in this room and this “network” seemed like a good source of information. Even if that shrine maiden or that witch might enjoy just running around without a clue and beating up whoever seemed suspicious, when given the option, Sakuya preferred to find a little bit out about what was going on first. Besides, she needed to find Remilia first and foremost.

Making sure she was presentable – which in this case included making sure the collar of her uniform covered, if not the whole dog collar, at the least the embarrassing tag hanging from it – Sakuya set the device on a drawer pointed at her, experimented with a few videos, then finally, once she was sure of herself, started recording her message.
